NASCAR officials said nine cars will start from the rear of the grid in today’s Cup Series street race in Chicago after failing pre-race inspection for unapproved adjustments. The cars involved are the Nos. 4, 5, 9, 10, 23, 24, 47, 48 and 78, driven by a group that includes Kyle Larson, Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, William Byron, Alex Bowman, Bubba Wallace, Noah Gragson, Ty Dillon and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. The No. 11 Toyota of Denny Hamlin will also drop to the back because the team installed a new engine, NASCAR said. Starting at the rear forces the affected drivers to give up their qualifying positions and could complicate pit-strategy calculations on the tight, 2.2-mile downtown circuit, which is staging its second Cup Series race.
