Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is considering a bid for business-news channel CNBC, the New York Post reported, citing people familiar with his thinking. The 61-year-old billionaire is said to believe the network would complement his media portfolio, which already includes the Washington Post. According to the report, Bezos’s interest hinges on Comcast’s plan to spin off CNBC, MSNBC, USA Network and other cable properties into a publicly traded company called Versant later this year. The cable group generated about $7 billion in revenue last year, but Comcast does not separately disclose CNBC’s earnings. The Post said any quick sale would face hurdles because Versant cannot dispose of major assets for two years without jeopardising the tax-free status of the spin-off. Comcast and Versant declined to comment, and representatives for Bezos did not respond to inquiries. A separate source cited by journalist Dylan Byers dismissed the Post’s account as “a complete fiction,” underscoring uncertainty over whether any discussions are under way.
