A senior member of Russia’s parliament said WhatsApp is “very likely” to be added to a government list of technology companies from so-called “unfriendly countries,” a designation that would subject the Meta Platforms-owned messenger to operating restrictions and could force it to leave the Russian market. The lawmaker described WhatsApp’s presence as a national-security risk and advised the company to prepare for an exit. He added that Max, a home-grown messaging service, stands to increase its market share if WhatsApp departs.
