Meta’s latest WhatsApp beta for Windows abandons the native WinUI client introduced in 2021 and instead ships a web-wrapper built on Microsoft’s Edge WebView2. Early testers and tech publications including Windows Latest and The Verge report the switch makes the interface look less integrated with Windows 11 and pushes key settings into more basic menus. In benchmarking, the preview build used roughly 30 percent more memory than the current Microsoft Store release and opened multiple WebView2 processes, raising concerns about performance on lower-spec PCs. Moving to a single web code base is expected to simplify feature roll-outs across desktop and mobile platforms, but Meta has not given a timetable for when the web wrapper will replace the existing production app. The beta still supports Channels and other recent additions such as expanded Status and Communities tools, yet notifications now follow the web version’s behavior rather than Windows’ native system. Separately, beta releases on Android are trialing a “Remind me” option that lets users long-press any message and schedule a follow-up alert after two hours, eight hours, 24 hours or a custom period. WhatsApp is also experimenting with proactive prompts highlighting unread messages from frequent contacts. The company has not indicated when the reminder features might reach iOS or the stable Android and Windows builds.
