Former U.S. president Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post on Aug. 13 that “if I got Moscow and Leningrad free, as part of the deal with Russia, the Fake News would say that I made a bad deal.” The comment appeared to reference a hypothetical negotiation in which Russia might cede control of major cities without compensation. Trump’s wording drew notice because Leningrad reverted to its pre-Soviet name, St. Petersburg, in 1991. The post quickly prompted reminders of the three-decade-old change and renewed scrutiny of the accuracy of the former president’s public statements.
Anyone who grew up in a Russian speaking household called it Leningrad 80% and Peter maybe 20%.
Only dumb people still call it Leningrad. https://t.co/6gMMQ0OSCz
