Ukrainian forces have conducted multiple drone attacks targeting Russian infrastructure in early August 2025. On Sunday, Ukrainian drones struck a fuel storage depot at Sochi airport, igniting fires that required the efforts of over 120 firefighters to control. The attack reportedly involved debris from a downed drone hitting a fuel tank. In addition to Sochi, drone strikes have also targeted the Rostov region, causing fires according to Russian sources. Further attacks included a significant fire at a rail hub in Volgograd, disrupting flight operations. On Thursday, Ukrainian drones hit the Afipsky oil refinery in southern Russia's Krasnodar Krai, causing a fire confirmed by Russian authorities. These attacks have impacted Russian fuel output, with reports indicating that strikes on two Rosneft refineries have reduced domestic fuel production, leading to an increase in crude exports to Western ports by up to 2 million barrels per day in August, 200,000 barrels per day higher than previously planned. Ukrainian military sources have announced these operations, which coincide with the deployment of advanced drone capabilities, including an AI-equipped fleet of 33,000 drones and counter-drone measures such as the use of agricultural aircraft armed with short-range air-to-air missiles to defend Ukrainian airspace.
