Ukraine’s Security Service said it used long-range drones to hit the Saki military airfield in Russian-occupied Crimea overnight on 3-4 August, destroying one Russian jet and damaging four others. The agency called the strike part of an effort to degrade Moscow’s ability to operate over the Black Sea and support forces in southern Ukraine. The raid is the latest in a series of Ukrainian drone operations that have pushed deeper into Crimea and mainland Russia during the summer, seeking to offset Russia’s superiority in manned aviation and naval power. Moscow has replied with intensified use of Iranian-designed Shahed drones and cruise missiles. On 6 August the unmanned aircraft targeted the central city of Dnipro, and the Russian Defence Ministry said the following day it struck a railway hub in the wider Dnipropetrovsk region and shot down eight UK-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles. Separately, a senior Ukrainian official said investigators recovered components made in India from downed Russian drones, underscoring the challenge of policing global supply chains. CNN reported continued Russian drone attacks on civilian areas around Kherson, complicating evacuation efforts as fighting along the southern front escalates.
