The Washington State Department of Transportation will close all northbound lanes of Interstate 5 through central Seattle from 11:59 p.m. Friday, July 18, to 5 a.m. Monday, July 21. The shutdown covers the stretch between the I-90 interchange and Northeast 45th Street while crews establish a work zone on the Ship Canal Bridge. During the closure, the I-5 express lanes will run northbound 24 hours a day, and drivers heading into downtown must use Edgar Martinez Drive or the Dearborn, James or Madison Street exits. The westbound I-90 ramp to northbound I-5 will also be closed. WSDOT warns of significant congestion on alternate routes, including SR 99 and surface streets. The work marks the first full phase of the $203 million, multi-year “Revive I-5” project, the bridge’s most extensive overhaul in roughly 40 years. After the weekend, northbound I-5 will be restricted to two lanes across the Ship Canal Bridge until Aug. 15, followed by another full northbound closure from Aug. 15–18 to remove the work zone. Additional southbound lane reductions are planned for later this year. Separately, all lanes of northbound State Route 99 in SeaTac will close overnight from 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, to 5 a.m. Thursday, July 17, for paving. Motorists are encouraged to consult WSDOT’s real-time traffic tools and consider transit to mitigate delays.
