Arsenal have completed the signing of Spain international Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, the Premier League club said on Sunday. The 26-year-old defensive midfielder joins on a long-term deal and becomes Arsenal’s second acquisition of the window following goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. The London side triggered Zubimendi’s release clause, with outlets in Britain and Spain quoting figures ranging from £51 million to about €65 million. Talks began last year and a provisional agreement was in place by March, helping Arsenal fend off a late approach from Real Madrid in June. Zubimendi, who will wear the No. 36 shirt, ends a seven-season senior spell at Real Sociedad in which he made 236 appearances. “This is a huge moment in my career… I set my sights on Arsenal because their style of play is a good fit for me,” the Euro 2024 winner said after the move was confirmed. Manager Mikel Arteta described the Basque midfielder as a player who will add “quality and football intelligence” to a midfield reshaped by the departures of Jorginho and Thomas Partey. Zubimendi’s arrival is expected to allow Declan Rice to move into a more advanced role alongside captain Martin Ødegaard as Arsenal attempt to convert consecutive runners-up finishes into silverware next season.
