Brazilian teenager Estevao made an immediate impact in his first appearance for Chelsea, scoring after 18 minutes in a pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen at Stamford Bridge on 8 August. The forward, who became eligible to join the London club only after turning 18, converted a rebound off the post to give the hosts a 1–0 lead and celebrated by kissing the club badge. Chelsea doubled their advantage late in the match through João Pedro and closed out a 2–0 victory. The fixture marked Chelsea’s return to their home ground after winning the FIFA Club World Cup, and provided manager Mauricio Pochettino with a first look at Estevao in blue ahead of the Premier League opener against Crystal Palace on 17 August.
