Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak said his relationship with the club "can’t continue" after accusing the Premier League side of breaking private promises over his future. In a statement posted on Instagram on Tuesday night, the 25-year-old Swede wrote that “change is in the best interests of everyone” and criticised what he called misleading portrayals of their discussions. Isak, who was voted into the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25, skipped the awards ceremony in Manchester, saying it did not feel appropriate to attend amid the dispute. The forward has not featured in pre-season or in Saturday’s goalless league opener against Aston Villa and has been training away from the first-team squad. He scored 23 league goals last term, making him one of Newcastle’s key assets, but has been pushing for a move to Liverpool since the summer window opened. Newcastle responded within hours, saying they were “disappointed” by the post but emphasising that Isak remains under contract and that no club official had promised he could leave this summer. The club added that it would consider a sale only on terms that serve Newcastle’s interests, conditions it said “have not transpired”. Liverpool lodged a bid of about £110 million earlier this month, according to people familiar with the matter, but Newcastle rejected the offer and have not encouraged further talks. The standoff now intensifies with Arne Slot’s champions due at St James’ Park on Monday, leaving Isak’s future unresolved as the transfer deadline approaches.
