Tottenham Hotspur said it is “disgusted” by the racist messages aimed at French striker Mathys Tel after the club’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup. Tel, 20, was targeted on social media following his missed penalty in Wednesday night’s shoot-out in Udine. The match ended 2-2 in regular time before PSG prevailed 4-3 on spot kicks. Lucas Chevalier denied Micky van de Ven, and Tel then fired wide with Tottenham’s final attempt, handing the Paris side the trophy. In a statement posted on Thursday, Spurs said the abuse came from "cowards hiding behind anonymous profiles" and pledged to work with law-enforcement bodies and social-media companies to identify and sanction offenders. The north-London club added that Tel had shown "bravery and courage" in volunteering to take a kick. The incident adds to a series of racist attacks on footballers online after high-profile misses, including those against Kylian Mbappé during Euro 2021, underscoring continued calls for tighter regulation of digital platforms.
