Danish cyclist Tobias Halland Johannessen said he has received a wave of violent online threats after a wheel-touch incident that sent two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar crashing during Wednesday’s 11th stage in Toulouse. Johannessen, 25, who rides for Uno-X Mobility, clipped Pogacar’s front wheel while shifting right in the lead group, causing the Slovenian to hit the pavement near a kerb. The rider immediately apologised publicly and later visited Pogacar, who told him not to worry and reported no serious injuries. Despite the apology, Johannessen said messages attacking him have flooded his inbox, describing the hate as “very frightening.” The episode highlights the growing problem of online abuse directed at professional athletes following high-profile incidents on the sport’s biggest stage.
