Truth Social, the social media platform founded by former President Donald Trump, has launched a new AI-powered search tool called Truth Search AI, developed in partnership with the startup Perplexity. The AI search engine aims to provide direct answers with citations and is currently in beta testing on the platform. While the underlying technology is powered by Perplexity’s Sonar API, Truth Social has the ability to limit the sources used by the AI, potentially influencing the information presented. Initial tests revealed notable differences between the sources accessed by the Truth Social version of the AI and the public Perplexity engine. The AI tool cites conservative news sources but also includes some that are not entirely favorable to Trump. Notably, the AI’s responses have contradicted some of Trump’s claims, stating that the 2020 election was not stolen, tariffs have not boosted the US stock market, and that former President Barack Obama is viewed favorably. The introduction of this AI feature follows similar moves by other social media platforms such as X/Grok, Meta AI, and Reddit, which have integrated AI capabilities to enhance user experience. The development reflects ongoing debates about AI’s role in shaping information dissemination and the challenges of balancing truth and misinformation in digital platforms.
