Goldman Sachs has accelerated its use of generative artificial intelligence, rolling out a proprietary "GS AI Assistant" across the firm after an internal pilot that already reached around 10,000 employees. The tool helps staff summarise complex documents, draft initial content and analyse data, and offers department-specific capabilities for units such as investment banking and wealth management, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters. Less than three weeks later, the bank began piloting "Devin," an autonomous software engineer developed by startup Cognition Labs. Chief Information Officer Marco Argenti told CNBC the program will sit alongside the firm’s 12,000 human developers, initially in the form of hundreds of instances that could scale into the thousands. Goldman expects the agentic AI to handle routine coding tasks—such as updating legacy code—and boost developer productivity by as much as three to four times, while remaining under human supervision. The initiatives place Goldman Sachs at the forefront of Wall Street’s AI race. Rivals including Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America have introduced chatbots and document-summarising tools, but Goldman is the first major bank reported to test a fully autonomous coding agent. Cognition Labs, backed by Founders Fund and valued at nearly $4 billion, sees the partnership as a milestone for enterprise adoption of agentic AI. Argenti said the goal is a "hybrid workforce" where employees who can effectively prompt and oversee AI agents advance alongside the technology.
