Google is broadening its translation arsenal on Android. Beta testers have begun receiving a "Live Translate" option inside Circle to Search that can overlay real-time translations on moving content such as GIFs, videos and scrolling web pages. The tool, shown under the name “Scroll and Translate,” lets users choose whether to translate an entire screen or a single app and can be toggled off without exiting the session. Separately, the Google Translate app is trialling a Gemini integration that introduces a model picker with "Fast" and "Advanced" modes. Fast handles routine queries, while Advanced relies on the Gemini large-language model for higher accuracy. The early build supports English-Spanish and English-French and sits alongside a new Duolingo-style practice mode aimed at language learning. Meta Platforms on Tuesday expanded access to Meta AI Translations, a free dubbing service that automatically converts creators’ voices in reels between English and Spanish while matching lip movements. The rollout covers every market where Meta AI is available and applies to all public Instagram accounts and Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers. Creators can preview or disable the translations and will see a new metric showing views by language. Meta said additional languages will follow. The back-to-back moves underscore a quickening race among U.S. tech giants to weave generative AI into consumer services, using translation tools to lower language barriers and extend the reach of social and mobile platforms.
