OpenAI has expanded access to its image-generation tool, making the capability available to all WhatsApp users worldwide. The company announced late on 16 June that anyone can now create pictures by messaging the official bot at 1-800-ChatGPT, eliminating the need to use the dedicated ChatGPT web or mobile applications. The rollout brings the same text-to-image technology that underpins ChatGPT’s standalone service directly into WhatsApp’s more than two-billion-user messaging platform. Users can type a prompt—such as “make a cat DJ in space”—and receive AI-generated artwork within the chat. The service remains free at the standard usage tier, while paid ChatGPT subscribers can link their accounts to obtain higher generation limits. Interest in ChatGPT-powered image tools surged earlier this year after the launch of the GPT-4o model, which improved rendering quality and drove a wave of viral, stylized images online. By integrating the feature into WhatsApp, OpenAI aims to broaden adoption further and compete with other consumer-facing image generators embedded in social networks and messaging apps.
