Elon Musk-backed xAI has released “Grok Code Fast 1,” a large-language model aimed at speeding software development tasks such as code generation, explanation and refactoring. The tool is embedded in the Cursor and Roo Code programming environments and is available immediately. Developers can use the service free of charge through 2 p.m. Pacific time on Sept. 2. After the introductory period, xAI will charge $0.20 for every million input tokens—about one-tenth of the rate commonly cited for OpenAI’s GPT-4, according to launch details shared with early users. Grok Code Fast 1 offers a 256,000-token context window and processes roughly 92 tokens a second, allowing it to handle large codebases and respond quickly. The model was quietly tested under the internal codename “Sonic” before today’s broader rollout. Early adopters say the system can navigate unfamiliar repositories, generate production-ready files and provide step-by-step explanations, positioning xAI as a low-cost challenger in the rapidly expanding market for AI coding assistants.
