The wage dispute between Banyana Banyana, the defending champions of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), and the South African Football Association (SAFA) was resolved after the team boycotted training in Morocco over unpaid bonuses and appearance fees. The disagreement centered on unpaid tournament bonuses, with SAFA initially claiming the issue was related to friendly match fees. Despite the players resuming training within 48 hours of talks, SAFA had not yet paid the outstanding fees at the time. The dispute drew public attention to SAFA's handling of player payments and its relationship with sponsors. Notably, Sasol, one of SAFA's main sponsors, confirmed it would not renew its sponsorship agreement, issuing an ultimatum to SAFA to cease exploiting Banyana Banyana and Sasol League clubs before any new contract is signed. The team, based in Oujda, Morocco, is preparing to defend their continental title starting July 5, 2025, inspired by their 2022 victory in Rabat. Meanwhile, the Confederation of African Football unveiled a new trophy for the 2024 WAFCON, marking a new chapter for women’s football on the continent. Nigeria, the record nine-time WAFCON champions, also return to the tournament in Morocco with ambitions to reclaim the title after a semi-final loss in 2022.
