Several thousand demonstrators gathered at Curries Fountain in Durban on Tuesday for a “Hands Off Mkhwanazi” march backing KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. The crowd, including civic groups and activists, walked to the Durban Central Police Station demanding government accountability amid chants of “Cyril must go,” organisers said. The protest follows Mkhwanazi’s recent claim that senior officials tried to stymie a provincial task team investigating political killings by ordering its disbandment after it uncovered a criminal syndicate. He also alleged that cabinet minister Senzo Mchunu colluded with business interests—an accusation Mchunu has rejected. In response to the allegations, President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed Mchunu on special leave and established a judicial commission of inquiry. March organiser Vincent Mdunge said the rally sought a comprehensive overhaul of the justice system rather than another inquiry that fails to curb corruption and political interference.
