South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile on 4 July visited the Johannesburg home of his late predecessor, David Mabuza, to convey condolences to the family and pay tribute to the former deputy president’s political legacy. Mashatile urged emerging African National Congress leaders to model themselves on Mabuza’s consensus-building style, saying the late politician had prioritised party unity during critical moments, including the ANC’s 2017 elective conference. Recalling that contest, Mashatile said Mabuza ultimately threw his support behind Cyril Ramaphosa for the presidency over Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, a decision colleagues such as former Mpumalanga premier Matthews Phosa described as decisive in Ramaphosa’s narrow victory. Funeral arrangements for Mabuza, who died earlier this week, have yet to be announced.
