The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued multiple warnings of an intense and persistent cold front affecting several provinces, including the Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal. Beginning mid-June 2025, the cold front brought icy temperatures, heavy rain, strong winds, and hazardous sea conditions, including damaging waves and flooding risks. The Namakwa District and coastal areas near Alexander Bay experienced level 4 warnings for dangerous waves, while the Eastern Cape faced level 2 warnings for damaging winds and snowfall in mountainous regions. The cold front system has caused localised flooding, particularly in the Western Cape, with emergency and disaster management teams on high alert. Humanitarian relief efforts have been mobilised to assist affected communities. The City of Cape Town has been preparing for continued disruptive rainfall and strong winds, with level 1 and level 4 warnings issued for ongoing severe weather through early July. Forecasts indicate that the cold front will persist into the weekend, with additional cold fronts expected to make landfall, bringing further rain, snow, and gusty winds. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, especially in informal settlements and low-lying areas prone to flooding. The weather service also warned of damaging winds along the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal and rough seas between the three Capes, with wind speeds reaching up to 60 km/h in some coastal areas. Overall, South Africa is experiencing a sustained period of cold, wet, and windy conditions with significant impacts on travel, outdoor activities, and vulnerable communities.
