A Madrid provincial court on Wednesday convicted Italian football manager Carlo Ancelotti of defrauding Spain’s tax authorities in 2014 and imposed a one-year prison term and a €386,361.93 fine. Judges found that Ancelotti failed to declare income from his image-rights agreements during his first spell in charge of Real Madrid, breaching Spanish individual income-tax rules. The panel acquitted the 66-year-old of similar accusations for the 2015 fiscal year, reducing the prosecution’s original case, which had alleged a total fraud of about €1.06 million and sought four years and nine months in jail. Under Spanish law, first-time non-violent offenders rarely serve custodial sentences of less than two years, meaning the punishment is expected to be suspended provided Ancelotti stays out of further legal trouble. Ancelotti, who repaid the outstanding tax debt in 2021, left Real Madrid at the end of last season and is now the head coach of Brazil’s national team. Neither the Italian nor the Brazilian Football Confederation has yet commented on the verdict, which can be appealed.
