Despite having one year remaining on his contract and winning the Liga ACB in his final season, Mateo's departure was confirmed through a mutual agreement. The club has appointed Sergio Scariolo as the new head coach, with the Italian coach signing a contract through 2028. Scariolo, who has a long history with Real Madrid and previously coached the team 23 years ago, will join after concluding his tenure as head coach of the Spanish national basketball team following the EuroBasket 2025 tournament. Scariolo announced that EuroBasket 2025 will be his final competition leading Spain, describing his departure as swift and almost convulsive. His return to Real Madrid marks the beginning of his second stint with the club.
