Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday accused the opposition Partido Popular of drafting a tax-code amendment tailored to protect the partner of Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso. Speaking in parliament, Sánchez read out the so-called “cláusula Quirón,” a provision the PP approved at its National Congress earlier in the day, which pledges to “incorporate the right to error and reduce the indefenselessness of the taxpayer.” Sánchez argued the wording amounts to a “reform made to measure” for Ayuso’s boyfriend, whom the Socialists have long alleged benefited from favorable treatment in a tax dispute. He denounced the clause as proof that the PP “defends the corrupt,” intensifying the government’s attacks on opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo ahead of next year’s general election. The PP has not yet responded publicly to Sánchez’s criticism. Party officials have described the clause as part of a broader plan to strengthen taxpayer rights and streamline Spain’s fiscal bureaucracy.
