Spain’s Supreme Court has ordered the Congreso de los Diputados and the Socialist Party (PSOE) to deliver a full accounting of donations and remuneration linked to former transport minister José Luis Ábalos. Judge Leopoldo Puente issued the request after the Guardia Civil’s anti-corruption unit (UCO) flagged major inconsistencies in Ábalos’s finances as part of the broader Koldo investigation. According to the tax agency, Ábalos donated €44,729 to the PSOE between 2014 and 2024, yet bank statements reviewed by UCO show only €8,471. A similar gap appears in his parliamentary earnings: the Treasury lists €751,421 in salary, allowances and supplements, while just €79,842 is traceable in his accounts. The UCO’s 490-page report describes the figures as an “apparent lack of synchronicity” and seeks precise dates, payment methods and originating accounts for every transaction. Puente’s order compels the PSOE headquarters on Ferraz Street and the lower house of parliament to supply the requested data “in the shortest possible time,” marking the first formal step toward clarifying whether the party’s financing—or Ábalos’s personal finances—was irregular. The findings will determine if the former minister, still a sitting deputy, faces further legal action and whether the ruling party must answer to allegations of improper funding.
