Spanish authorities have recovered the bodies of a 60-year-old former U.S. fighter pilot and his 13-year-old son whose two-seat Team Rocket F-4 Raider biplane plunged into the sea near Port de Sóller on the island of Mallorca. The aircraft went down at about 8:20 p.m. local time on Saturday, 2 August, after witnesses observed it performing aerial stunts close to the coast. Specialist divers from the Civil Guard located the victims at a depth of roughly 30 metres and brought them ashore at around 1 p.m. on Sunday following an overnight search that resumed at first light. The plane had departed from a private aerodrome inland two hours before the accident; no flight recorder was on board. Police have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the crash and whether additional passengers might have been involved, although initial reports indicate only the pilot and his son were in the aircraft. Local aviation authorities said the aerobatic manoeuvres observed before the impact had been authorised.
