Sweden’s Armand “Mondo” Duplantis raised the men’s pole vault world record to 6.29 metres at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Budapest, adding one centimetre to the mark he set in Stockholm in June. The 25-year-old cleared the height on his second attempt on 12 August, registering his 13th career world record and his third of the 2025 season. Duplantis had already secured victory with a first-time clearance at 6.11 metres before requesting the bar be moved to record height. Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis finished second with 6.02 metres, while Australia’s Kurtis Marschall took third at 5.82 metres at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, also known as the Hungarian Grand Prix. Since first seizing the world record at 6.17 metres in 2020, Duplantis has improved it by a centimetre on nearly every occasion, extending the standard 15 centimetres beyond the long-standing mark of Sergey Bubka. The double Olympic and two-time world champion now turns his attention to next month’s World Championships in Tokyo, where he is favoured to defend his title and may attempt the sport’s first 6.30-metre jump.
