French swimmer Léon Marchand captured his third consecutive world championship in the 400-metre individual medley on Sunday, clocking 4:04.73 at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. The 22-year-old dominated the race from the butterfly leg onward, finishing nearly four seconds clear of Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita (4:08.32) and Russia’s Ilia Borodin, who competed under a neutral flag. Thirty minutes later, Marchand returned to the pool to anchor France’s men’s 4×100-metre medley relay. The quartet of Yohann Ndoye-Brouard (backstroke), Marchand (breaststroke), Maxime Grousset (butterfly) and Yann Le Goff (freestyle) set a French record of 3:27.96 to take silver behind the Russian squad, also racing neutrally. The result delivered an eighth medal for France in Singapore and capped a meet in which Marchand had already lowered the world record in the 200 m medley earlier in the week.
