Wayve Technologies, a UK-based startup, has announced its expansion into the United States with the opening of a new office in Sunnyvale, California. The company, which raised $1.3 billion this year from investors led by SoftBank, will begin on-road testing of its AI-driven autonomous driving technology in the Bay Area, including San Francisco. Unlike other autonomous vehicle companies, Wayve's approach relies less on high definition maps and LiDAR, focusing instead on AI software that works globally. This expansion marks a significant milestone for Wayve as it seeks to push the boundaries of AI generalization, strengthen strategic partnerships with companies like Microsoft, Nvidia, and Uber, and support future regulation. The company aims to offer a flexible AI software licensing model for automakers. Jamie Shotton and CEO Alex Kendall highlighted the importance of this move, noting that Wayve's Embodied AI will now be tested across both the UK and the US.
