Tesla Inc. has secured a rideshare permit from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, allowing its Robotaxi LLC to operate a robotaxi service in the state. This approval classifies Tesla Robotaxi LLC as a licensed transportation network company alongside Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. The permit aligns with new Texas regulations for autonomous vehicles, which take effect on September 1, 2025, and require autonomous ride-sharing services to have cameras and insurance. Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin is scheduled to open to the public next month, with plans to expand coverage in Austin and launch robotaxi operations in selected Asian markets. Following the permit announcement, Tesla's shares rose by up to 5%, reflecting investor optimism about the company's autonomous ride-hailing prospects.
