A long-haired Chihuahua helped Swiss rescuers locate its owner after the man plunged roughly eight metres into a crevasse on the Fee Glacier near Saas-Fee on 4 July, according to helicopter operator Air Zermatt. The hiker, who has not been identified, used an amateur walkie-talkie to transmit a distress call, but the hole in the glacier was almost invisible from the air. After about 30 minutes of searching, an Air Zermatt crew spotted the small dog pacing on a rock beside the opening, enabling specialists to pinpoint the site and abseil down to the casualty. Both the man and the Chihuahua were hoisted out and flown to a hospital in nearby Visp. Air Zermatt said the dog’s calm behaviour "contributed significantly to the successful rescue," calling the animal a "four-legged hero" that likely saved its owner’s life.
