Armed Groups Breach Sweida Ceasefire, Kill Syrian Officer

Armed groups violated a ceasefire in Syria’s southern Sweida province on Sunday, attacking positions of the Internal Security Forces and shelling nearby villages, state-run Ekhbariya TV reported. The broadcaster, citing a security source, said one officer was killed and several others were wounded in the assault. The attack comes less than a month after factional clashes between Druze fighters and allied Sunni tribes left hundreds dead and prompted a U.S.-brokered truce. While state media put Sunday’s death toll at one, Al Jazeera cited local sources saying as many as five security personnel were killed, underscoring the fluid nature of the situation. Sweida, a predominantly Druze region bordering Jordan, has seen repeated flare-ups since Syria’s civil war began in 2011. The latest breach threatens to unravel the fragile ceasefire that had temporarily quelled violence and allowed government forces to redeploy. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, and authorities said investigations are under way.
