Turkey played a decisive role in securing a ceasefire in Syria’s southern Sweida province, Turkish security sources told Reuters on Thursday. The truce was reached after two days of intense fighting, the sources said. The clashes began between Bedouin Arab groups and local Druze fighters and later drew in forces loyal to Damascus. The flare-up followed Israeli air strikes on Damascus earlier in the week, further raising regional tensions. According to the security officials, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and National Intelligence Organisation chief Ibrahim Kalin led Ankara’s mediation efforts, holding talks with Druze leader Walid Jumblatt as well as counterparts in the United States, Israel and Syria. Both officials kept President Recep Tayyip Erdogan updated throughout the negotiations. The sources said Turkey adopted a "determined stance," siding with the Syrian government to quell the violence and press the parties toward a halt in hostilities. Details of the ceasefire arrangement have not been disclosed, but Ankara views the agreement as critical to stabilising its southern neighbour.
