An explosion struck a military site close to Aleppo International Airport on 11 July, sending thick smoke over the northern Syrian city and reportedly damaging several homes in the nearby An-Nayrab Palestinian refugee camp. Preliminary local reports pointed to an arms and ammunition depot as the epicentre of the blast. Casualty figures and the exact cause have not been confirmed, and Syrian government agencies had yet to comment as of late Friday. The Aleppo incident follows a string of unexplained detonations in opposition-held Idlib province. On 2 July three large blasts were recorded in the towns of Kafriya and Al-Foua, while on 7–8 July ammunition depots east of Idlib city and between Zardana and Foua also exploded. Witness footage from each site showed fireballs and secondary blasts typical of munitions storage facilities. Although Syrian facilities have previously been targeted by Israeli airstrikes and face risks from leftover ordnance, no group has claimed responsibility for the latest series of explosions. The pattern has heightened security concerns in the rebel-controlled northwest, where civilian areas sit close to military stockpiles and infrastructure.
