The Syrian Arab News Agency, citing an unnamed official at the Ministry of Information, said on 29 June that reports claiming the Syrian army and Turkish intelligence had thwarted an assassination attempt against President Ahmed al-Shar'a are “completely unfounded.” Several regional media outlets earlier in the day alleged that security forces from both countries foiled a plot to kill the president during his recent visit to the southern province of Daraa. The ministry statement stressed that “no such incident occurred” and urged the public to disregard what it called baseless rumours. The swift denial comes amid heightened sensitivity to security rumours in Syria, where cross-border cooperation with Turkey is sporadic and politically delicate. Authorities did not specify whether they plan further comment or investigation, saying only that normal presidential activities continue.
