Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa met survivors of the 2013 sarin attack on Eastern Ghouta and vowed to hold those responsible to account for the assault that killed 1,119 civilians, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights. Marking the atrocity’s 12th anniversary—the first since Bashar al-Assad was deposed in December—Sharaa said accountability "is a right that does not expire" and reiterated his pledge to eliminate remaining chemical stockpiles in cooperation with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. In a separate briefing to Arab media, Sharaa underscored the need for a unified state monopoly on arms and described a power-sharing understanding with Kurdish commander Mazloum Abdi as the foundation for broader national dialogue. He added that the arrangement enjoys both domestic and international backing. Sharaa also confirmed "advanced" discussions on a security agreement with Israel that would be anchored to the 1974 disengagement line, saying any deal serving Syria’s interests will be considered. Turning to Lebanon, he acknowledged past Syrian meddling as a "grave mistake," called for ties "from state to state" and urged Beirut to capitalise on Syria’s post-war reconstruction and regional economic integration.
