Since mid-June 2025, Turkey has been grappling with multiple wildfires across various provinces, with the western province of Izmir experiencing some of the most severe outbreaks. Initial fires in Manisa, Balıkesir, Karabük, and Bilecik were brought under control by early July. However, wildfires in Izmir, particularly in districts such as Aliağa, Foça, Menderes, Seferihisar, Çeşme, Ödemiş, and Buca, have persisted for over a week, fueled by high temperatures exceeding 40°C and strong winds reaching up to 30 miles per hour. These conditions have led to the evacuation of more than 50,000 residents, with approximately 42,000 from Izmir alone. The fires have caused damage to homes, power lines, and farmland, and forced the suspension of all flights at Izmir airport. Two fatalities have been reported in the Izmir region due to the fires. Emergency response efforts have involved extensive aerial and ground firefighting resources, including up to 15 planes, 19 helicopters, over 100 fire trucks, and hundreds of personnel. Additional wildfires have occurred in Antalya, Hatay, Tekirdağ, Çanakkale, and Bursa provinces, with authorities evacuating thousands more residents, particularly in Bursa, Turkey's fourth-largest city, which is currently under threat amid ongoing blazes. By mid-July, many of the fires outside Izmir were contained, including those in Tekirdağ's Şarköy district and Balıkesir. The wildfires have been exacerbated by an early and intense heatwave affecting the region. Forest access has been restricted in 47 provinces across Turkey as a precautionary measure. Firefighting and evacuation operations continue as authorities work to control the spread and mitigate further damage.
