Turkish authorities have launched multiple investigations and arrests following the publication of a controversial cartoon by the satirical magazine Leman, which depicted Prophet Muhammad and Moses shaking hands above a bombed city. The cartoon, published in the June 26, 2025 issue, sparked widespread outrage across Turkey, with government officials condemning it as an insult to religious values and a hate crime disguised as humor. Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office initiated a criminal probe for "publicly insulting religious values," resulting in arrest warrants and the detention of six individuals connected to the magazine, including cartoonist Doğan Pehlevan, two editors, a graphic designer, and other staff members. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other senior officials vowed legal accountability for those involved. The magazine's website and social media accounts were subsequently blocked. Protests erupted in Istanbul, leading to clashes with police using pepper spray and tear gas. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and opposition parties expressed strong reactions, with AKP lawmakers performing religious recitations in parliament as a form of protest. Additionally, a financial investigation was launched into Leman's management to determine if the magazine received foreign funding. Separately, extensive anti-corruption operations targeted several municipalities governed by the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP). In Manavgat district, Antalya province, police detained 68 individuals, including Mayor Niyazi Nefi Kara and two deputies, on allegations of bribery and corruption involving illicit gains estimated at 800 million Turkish lira. Evidence included videos showing a deputy mayor accepting bribes hidden in a baklava box containing 110,000 euros. Similar operations led to the detention of CHP mayors in Adana, Adıyaman, and the arrest of Antalya Metropolitan Mayor Muhittin Böcek. Prosecutors are continuing investigations into these cases, which have drawn sharp political criticism and accusations of judicial bias. CHP leader Özgür Özel condemned the operations as politically motivated and threatened public protests, while AKP officials denounced his statements. The developments have intensified political tensions ahead of upcoming elections in Turkey.
