Turkey’s intelligence chief, İbrahim Kalın, met Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in Baghdad on 8 July, Turkish and regional media reported. The visit is part of Ankara’s “Terörsüz Türkiye” drive to end the four-decade insurgency waged by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Sources familiar with the talks said the two officials reviewed coordination mechanisms ahead of a ceremony planned for 11 July, when an initial group of PKK fighters is expected to lay down arms. Kalın’s delegation also held technical meetings in the Iraqi capital to discuss implementation details with security agencies. Kalın is slated to brief parliament speaker Numan Kurtulmuş in Ankara at 16:00 local time on 9 July. Lawmakers are preparing to establish a cross-party commission that would monitor the disarmament process and related reintegration measures. The Baghdad trip follows Kalın’s shuttle diplomacy in recent weeks, including a 29 June meeting with Hamas Shura Council head Mohammad Ismail Darwish on securing a Gaza cease-fire and a 3 July inspection of security operations in the southeastern Turkish province of Hakkari.
