Crunchyroll and Kadokawa used Gamescom’s Opening Night Live showcase to reveal “Sekiro: No Defeat,” a hand-drawn anime series based on FromSoftware’s acclaimed 2019 video game “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.” A one-minute trailer offered the first footage of protagonist Wolf’s duel with Genichiro Ashina and confirmed that the show will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll when it debuts in 2026. The series is being produced by Kadokawa, Qzil.la and ARCH, with director Kenichi Kutsuna (One Punch Man) overseeing the project and Takuya Satou writing the screenplay. Character design is led by Takahiro Kishida, and original cast members Daisuke Namikawa (Wolf), Miyuki Satou (Kuro) and Kenjiro Tsuda (Genichiro) will reprise their roles. Crunchyroll said the adaptation “channels the precision and spirit” of the game and will be available worldwide except in Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus. “Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice” has sold about 10 million copies and won Game of the Year honors in 2019, but the franchise has not received a sequel. The anime marks the first major expansion of the IP and adds to a growing slate of video-game adaptations aimed at streaming audiences following Sony’s increased investment in Kadokawa’s anime output.
