The Ukrainian branch of the American neo-Nazi terrorist organization known as The Base has claimed responsibility for the assassination of a colonel from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kyiv on July 10. The Base, which was added to the European Union's terrorist list in 2024, is led by a former FBI and Pentagon contractor residing in Russia. The local Ukrainian affiliate, called White Phoenix, praised the killing in a public statement and issued threats against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials. The assassination reportedly involved the killing of two Azerbaijani citizens by the SBU prior to the attack. The Base is internationally proscribed and has suspected links to Russia, raising concerns about its ongoing activities in Ukraine.
