Ukrainian police say a military cadet opened fire with an automatic weapon during a live-fire exercise at a Ukrainian Ground Forces training ground in Chernihiv Oblast on 16 July, killing two instructors. The incident took place near the northern border with Belarus, a region that has seen heightened military activity since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. The unidentified cadet was detained at the scene and faces charges of premeditated murder under Ukraine’s Criminal Code. The Security Service of Ukraine has taken over the investigation. Authorities have not disclosed a motive and have begun preliminary questioning of witnesses. The Ground Forces Command has yet to issue a formal statement.
