On the night of August 7-8, 2025, Russian forces launched UAV strikes on Ukraine's Sumy region, damaging non-residential buildings, a shop, cars, high-rise buildings, and social facilities in the Sumy and Shostka communities. Ukrainian officials reported that in July, their forces hit 23,400 enemy targets with drones and eliminated 5,134 Russian occupiers. Ukraine is advancing its drone capabilities, including the MiddleStrike strike drone project with a range of 50 to 120 kilometers. The conflict has intensified with Russian drones reaching speeds of up to 500 km/h, posing a significant threat. To counter these, Ukraine is employing innovative measures such as using Zlin Z-137 Agro Turbo agricultural aircraft equipped with Soviet-origin R-73 short-range air-to-air missiles for drone interception. Furthermore, Ukraine has received a substantial reinforcement of 33,000 artificial intelligence-enabled drones to defend its airspace. Combat operations against Shahed drones are ongoing in the Odesa region. Additionally, Ukraine is discreetly deploying F-16 fighter jets, signaling a shift in aerial warfare tactics.
