The Trump administration’s immigration crackdown reached a deadline Tuesday, when U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi demanded written assurances from 32 jurisdictions, including Boston, that they would dismantle policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu rejected the ultimatum at a City Hall press conference, telling federal officials to “stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures.” Accompanied by community leaders, Sen. Edward Markey and a mariachi ensemble, Wu said Boston would keep its 2014 Trust Act, which bars police from holding people solely for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Wu’s written response argues Boston remains “the safest major city in America” because immigrants can report crimes without fear of deportation. She contends state law already restricts local participation in federal immigration arrests and that any attempt to withhold funds would be unlawful coercion. Bondi’s Aug. 13 letter warned that non-compliant jurisdictions could lose federal grants, face civil suits or see local officials prosecuted for “harboring and smuggling.” Trump adviser Stephen Miller repeated that threat on Fox News, saying criminal charges are possible for leaders who miss the deadline. Boston now joins Chicago, Philadelphia and other large cities that have indicated they will not change course, setting up a potential legal clash over how far Washington can go in forcing local cooperation on immigration enforcement.
STEPHEN MILLER: “Sanctuary cities like Boston REFUSE to turn over these menacing threats to public safety — and so now, they face NOT only revocation of funds... but also potential criminal charges for harboring and smuggling.” 🔥🔥 https://t.co/z8wKY93pvf

Listen to this from Stephen Miller and tell me it’s not already way past time to start prosecuting “sanctuary city” mayors for putting illegals back on the street to rape and molest little kids rather than cooperate with ICE. This evil has to stop. https://t.co/cLpoCLCCzV
