Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser said the deployment of hundreds of federal law-enforcement officers ordered by President Donald Trump has produced a sharp and rapid decline in crime across the nation’s capital. Speaking at a Wednesday press conference, Bowser cited city data showing an 87% drop in carjackings during the 20-day period since the federal surge began, compared with the same stretch last year. Overall violent crime has fallen 45% in the past three weeks, and police report fewer gun crimes and homicides. The mayor credited the influx of agents from the FBI, DEA, ATF, Park and Capitol Police, alongside National Guard troops, for bolstering the Metropolitan Police Department’s capacity. “We greatly appreciate the surge of officers that enhance what MPD has been able to do in this city,” she said, adding that the presence has made neighborhoods “feel safer and are safer.” Bowser also acknowledged concerns that the expanded federal role could strain community trust and said city officials are working to preserve cooperation between residents and law enforcement as the crackdown continues.
