Clark County School District Superintendent Jhone Ebert said she has received verbal assurances from federal immigration authorities that they will refrain from enforcement actions on district campuses as classes resume on 11 August. Ebert told local media she and the district’s police chief met last week with Homeland Security Investigations and Border Patrol representatives, who signalled they will conduct any operations away from schools. The commitment comes amid heightened concern among immigrant families after the Trump administration rescinded an Obama-era policy that discouraged immigration enforcement at so-called sensitive locations such as schools, churches and hospitals. Community advocates report some parents have considered keeping children home or arranging alternative transport because of fear of potential raids. CCSD—the nation’s fifth-largest district—serves about 300,000 pupils; roughly half identify as Hispanic or Latino, 50,000 are English-language learners and 17,000 are newcomer students. The district does not collect information on immigration status and says existing policies already require agents seeking student records or access to campuses to present a valid warrant or court order. Ebert urged families to send children to school, saying enrolment levels so far match last year, but acknowledged lingering anxiety. Nevada lawmakers failed this spring to pass legislation that would have formally barred immigration agents from school grounds after Governor Joe Lombardo vetoed the Student Safety Act, calling it overbroad. In the absence of a state mandate, Ebert said the district will continue to rely on its own protocols and the newly secured federal pledge to protect students’ right to education regardless of immigration status.
