A Florida judge on 23 Aug denied bond to Harjinder Singh, a 28-year-old Indian national who prosecutors say was in the United States illegally when he made an unauthorized U-turn on Florida’s Turnpike near Fort Pierce on 12 Aug. The maneuver forced a minivan to collide with the trailer of his semi-truck, killing all three occupants. Singh faces three counts each of vehicular homicide and manslaughter, along with immigration violations, and is being held in the St. Lucie County Jail under a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer. Singh was arrested last week in Stockton, California, after leaving Florida the day after the crash. Authorities allege he entered the country unlawfully from Mexico in 2018 but nevertheless obtained a California commercial driver’s license—an issuance that has drawn sharp criticism from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. DHS officials called the license a failure of state vetting procedures, while California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office said Singh received a federal work permit during the prior administration, a claim DHS disputes. Immigration officers also detained Singh’s 25-year-old brother, Harneet Singh, who was riding in the truck and is likewise alleged to be in the country without authorization. Both men face deportation proceedings once the criminal case is resolved. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who dispatched Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins to accompany Singh’s extradition flight, has cited the case as evidence of what he calls lax enforcement of federal immigration and commercial-licensing rules.
