Americans’ views on immigration have shifted sharply in the past year, according to a new Gallup poll of 1,402 adults conducted June 2-26. A record-high 79 percent now say immigration is good for the United States, up from 64 percent in 2024, while just 17 percent call it harmful. The share wanting overall immigration reduced has fallen to 30 percent, down 25 points in the same period, and 38 percent favor deporting all undocumented immigrants. The change is most pronounced among Republicans. Sixty-four percent of GOP respondents describe immigration as beneficial, compared with 39 percent last year. Republicans who want immigration levels cut have dropped to 48 percent from 88 percent. Support for allowing undocumented immigrants to work toward citizenship now stands at nearly 80 percent nationwide and exceeds 60 percent among Republicans, Gallup found. The more welcoming mood contrasts with President Donald Trump’s push for mass deportations and expanded detention facilities. Only 35 percent of adults approve of his handling of immigration, while 62 percent disapprove, including 69 percent of independents. Broader job-approval surveys by NPR/Marist and other pollsters also show majorities favoring a pathway to legal status over large-scale removals, underscoring the political risks of the administration’s hard-line strategy.
Trump's callous deportation raids in neighborhoods and workplaces (as opposed to border enforcement) have made Americans' views about immigrants MORE positive. Why deport people who have become Americans in all but legal status? https://t.co/NebvdrCaoS
A large majority of U.S. adults in a new survey say they believe immigration is good for the country while the number of those wanting to bar it has dropped 20 points in the last year. https://t.co/GElnb2qNn6
