The Trump administration is examining whether it can cut federal health-care funding to hospitals that provide gender-affirming treatments to minors, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing government officials. CMS Administrator Mehmet Oz last month sent letters to nine children’s hospitals requesting data on sex-reassignment surgeries, hormone therapy and puberty blockers for patients under 18. With the 30-day deadline passing on 28 June without full responses, the agency is now reviewing its authority to withhold Medicaid and Affordable Care Act marketplace payments or expel non-compliant hospitals from Medicaid altogether. “President Trump has been clear: America will protect kids from life-altering and experimental procedures,” Oz wrote. Facilities that received the request include Boston Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Seattle Children’s Hospital and others. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which relies on federal programs for about 65% of its revenue, said it will close its gender-care program in response to the inquiry. Boston Children’s Hospital said it is still evaluating the letter but noted it must comply with Massachusetts law requiring access to gender-affirming care. The move escalates a broader administration effort to limit medical procedures for transgender youth. CMS’s action follows a January executive order targeting what the White House termed “surgical mutilation,” and comes amid growing state-level restrictions—27 states now curb gender-related care for minors. Medical groups that support the treatments say such care can lessen depression and suicide risk among transgender adolescents.
